Some people might argue that it's a hassle to have to download the maps to the phone for where you're travelling I say there are trade-offs in any device.
Tried Basecamp once, thought it was garbage, and have never looked back. So at least for me, my Android phone is a device that not only competes with a Garmin, but hands-down tramples it. I downloaded the maps of the associated areas to my phone and I had no problems in areas with poor signal.
